During our weekly prayer time we offer the opportunity for the lighting of intercessory candles. The candle lighting is symbolic of a commitment taken on by the lighter in which they are actively praying for the salvation of an individual. This particular prayer is one of intercession whereby the prayers of the candle lighter are not for their own sake but for that of another. In this case the intercessory prayer is one in which we pray for someone who is not in a relationship with Christ so that the circumstances of their life will be effected by God allowing for the opportunity for recognition of who Chirst is and then reconciliation with Him.
Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise. Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.
James 5 13-16 (NIV)
